OK GUH.
This episode. It is filler sure but it is so rare and interesting and charming and just. This episode is gem and I put off recapping it for so long because I’m terrified I won’t do it justice.
It deals with real-life issues school children have (self-esteem, acceptance, competition, worries about friendship).
It focuses on a character who is very relate-able (especially to Japanese kids what with the academia aspect, but really to a lot of the kids who loved this show internationally - since she’s also the bookish, shy child, the quiet one).
Although it’s an Ami-centric episode, Usagi also shines so brightly I’m practically blinded and when people bash her I just always want to direct them to this episode out of all the others because it’s Usagi -Usagi- not Sailor Moon, not Princess Serenity, but her civilian personality’s unshakeable sense of self that is all kinds of awesome.
But mostly it turns a spotlight on Usagi and Ami’s friendship, which is often overlooked in the anime.
Usagi was Ami’s first friend, and Ami was Usagi’s first fellow senshi. They fought alone together for a while even before Rei showed up, and it took a long time for Rei and Usagi to warm up to each other, so for a long time Ami was Usagi’s only senshi friend.
They love each other very deeply but they are also very, very different. This could put a strain on their friendship, and sometimes it does - but not from and toward each other but from other people - (for example, again that episode where Usagi worries she is bad for Ami like the principal says). And on Ami’s side, the anime doesn’t explore it much but PGSM explored her insecurity with Usagi’s popularity and her own possessiveness for Usagi’s time and affection. I feel like this episode scratched the surface of aspects of Ami’s character and the Ami/Usagi friendship that laid the groundwork for the Dark Mercury chapter.
SO ANYWAY THIS EPISODE IS AMAZING
And I capped the above mostly to show Usagi being supportive and sweet, and self-deprecating without being jealous at all. And Ami was adorable like “oh I got lucky the test just happened to cover what I studied.”
Which yes. That happens when you study everything.

Sailor Moon would be dead without Tuxedo Mask.
Basically.
and vice versa
